What is Ransomware ?
Ransomware stops you from using your PC. It holds your PC or files for “ransom”. This page describes what ransomware is and what it does, and provides advice on how to prevent and recover from ransomware infections.
How to protect from Ransomware ?
1. Do not open attachments in unknown senders’ emails
In most cases, ransomware that encrypt your files are distributed via email as attachment. The cyberciminals’ goal is to make you to open the attachment, that is why malicious emails are titled as if they contained important imformation, such as court order, notice of intended prosecution, late fee notice or similar to these.
Not only EXE files can be harmful.
2. Keep your operating system, antivirus software and other applications timely updated
3. Create backup copies on your files and keep them in a remote storage
Keep your backup files in a storage unplugged from your computer (an external drive) or in a cloud repository. This will protect you not only from file-encrypting malware but from a computer breakdown as well. We recommend that your backups stored encrypted.
4. Configure access to shared network folders
If you use shared network folders, you create separate network folders for each user. Writing permissions should be granted only to the owner of the folder. Thus, only one network folder will be damaged if a computer is infected. Otherwise, malware that attacks one computer may affect all shared network folders.
